Ee- Elephant Unit Recap

Unit- Elephant
Letter- Ee
Number- 15
Words To Remember- "I will remember what God has done for me."

Elephant unit was pretty basic, but he really enjoyed it. Had there not been a 4 day hiatus to life, as a result of an ice storm, we may have been able to visit the zoo or something, but we covered the content and will save the zoo trip for a sunnier, more pleasant day. :) There was a lot of focus on how elephants "never forget", thus teaching us that we too should never forget what God has done for us.
"Elevan", as Grayson and Ada have named him, was a visitor in our classroom during this unit! We read him stories, played matching games, and cuddled with him lots this week. ;)

We had a National Geographic book that was passed down to us, and he has really enjoyed finding our animals in it and reading about them. It was fun to compare their size to things that are familiar to him...the elephant tusks, for example, is almost as big as Mommy!! And, as usual, the salt tray was a favorite.
Math this week was a dot-to-dot. He did well with this and we quized a lot on number recognition, which he is right on with, and enjoys very much! Numbers, numbers, numbers...he LOVES them!! And we have yet to figure out where this love came from! ;)

His reading skills are coming. He is enjoying the process, and maybe even bored with it at times, but we continue following the curriculum and add a little challenge, here and there.

As I mentioned, an elephants memory was a big focus in our lessons, so we played several different memory games. And, anything that challenges his mind, he enjoys! This was a group of items he studied and then turned around and I removed an item or two and he had to guess what was gone. He would've played that all day.
He spent a considerable amount of time making an elephant out of pearler beads...followed the pattern and set it up himself! Over the course of two days, he was able to get him finished!

He was really into tracing around the elephant badge this week and really took his time writing out his words. Taking his time with writing and coloring is very hard for him. Definitely not his favorite thing to do, but I have seen him a few times in the last week really take his time and do a nice job with these things and that's always nice!

The Sled, was unexpectedly appropriate for our week last week! ;) He enjoys reading the little easy readers. It is definitely a confidence builder for him!

This unit was filled with several good days and he is steady working towards an ice cream party by reading his books.

The completed elephant. It was definitely a lot of work and something he really enjoyed! He has since made a police car and a boat!

It was the second Monday of the month, so he was able to attend his second class at the local college. He really seems to be enjoying it! They do a math class and a science unit while they are there. He says they learned about cold blooded and warm blooded animals this time. ;)
He got a couple days off, thanks to the weather, and loved "snow plowing".

One of the things I am trying to get him to do lately is complete his work without "company". He doesn't NEED help on some of the work, but he enjoys having someone in there. Since we are half way through the year and we will be adding another student next year, I think it is important for him to attempt some of the work and then I can help him make corrections or talk in more detail about certain things. He did much better with this, during this unit!

So unit 15 is complete, and we move on to Penguins! I am excited about this one, and hoping for good weather, normal schedules, and lots of fun! I have found lots of cute ideas and really hoping to get to them during this unit! ;)

(I don't think I have ever shared the My Father's World Kindergarten Pinterest Board that I have lots of  extra activities pinned to also!)
